Ubisoft To Send Cease & Desist Requests To DDoS Services Attacking 'Rainbox Six Siege' Players (zdnet.com) 32
An anonymous reader writes: Ubisoft plans to send cease & desist legal letters to operators of DDoS-for-hire services, also known as DDoS booters or DDoS stressors. The company said it plans on making this step as part of a global action plan to curb DDoS attacks aimed at Rainbox Six Siege multiplayer servers.
The French video game company has been under a wave of DDoS attacks ever since last week when it launched the Operation Ember Rise update for the Rainbow Six Siege game. Along with the update, Ubisoft also performed a reset of multiplayer rankings. Following the reset, multiple players are suspected to have started launching DDoS attacks at the company's servers.
The cheating players have been using the DDoS attacks to trigger server lag and slow down matches. The goal was to annoy opponents, who in many cases would end up disconnecting and receiving a penalty for leaving the match, allowing the player who launched the DDoS attack to gain rank points undeserved. The DDoS attacks have been widespread as several players got wind of the trick and started renting DDoS firepower from online DDoS for-hire sites.

DDoS services are usually rented by people trying to blackmail larger targets like banks, insurance companies or other corporate servers. Using them to cheat in a game is a comparable minor crime committed with them.
Do you honestly think a server provider in generistan gives half a fuck about a cease and desist letter from a game company when they don't give a shit pissing off international banks?

Which essentially means that you can kiss your US market good-bye because then only non-US citizens will use DDoS assisted cheating to remain on the top of your game. Yeah. Smart move. *golfclap*

You would have full contact golf where you try to kill your opponents with a golf ball shot from cannon, and unlimited class America's Cup races seeing battleships brought out of mothballs and firing broadsides at each other.
The companies that put out these online games are trying to profit off the players need to go to any length to win, they shouldn't be surprised when they do go to any length.

Willfully defying a strongly worded letter shows intent to commit a crime or tort, which makes the crime or tort easier for the FBI or Ubisoft respectively to prove in court.

Go after the money. Make it as difficult as possible for them to get paid and you can cut down on the attacks.

Why not spend some quality time on your server logs, associate who is benefiting from the DDOS and ban them?

Why even publicize this? All they need to do is correlate players with DDoS source addresses, and ban those players.

The correlation is approximately zero. A DDoS is by definition distributed; it's highly unlikely to include the machine of the person requesting it.
