Spider-Man, Ratchet and Clank, Gran Turismo and More Are Coming To PS5 (arstechnica.com) 20

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Ars Technica: Nearly three months after laying out some of the PlayStation 5's technological underpinnings, Sony today offered a first extended look at actual games running on the upcoming hardware during a live event. The event started off with a glimpse of an "expanded and enhcanced" version of Grand Theft Auto V, which is coming to the PlayStation 5 in 2021, in case you need an excuse to buy the game again. PlayStation 5 owners will also get GTA Online free at launch in 2021, while PS4 owners of GTAV will get $1 million in monthly online GTA Cash every month until the PS5 version launches.

A follow-up to last year's Spider-Man featuring Miles Morales will be hitting the PS5 in Holiday 2020. "A hero is just someone who doesn't give up," an unseen narrator says over the footage. "Your dad said that. He was right. Now it's your turn. Go be a hero Miles." Though the footage shown is tagged with a "captured on PS5," (and a ""Be greater, be yourself" slogan), it's unclear if it will also be available on older PS4 systems. Ratchet and Clank are back for more madcap run and gun mayhem in Rift Apart, a game that seems focused on warping quickly between dimensions that are randomly collapsing in on one another. The trailer shows the duo riding dragons, facing pirates, sliding down futuristic buildings, and more. And one dimension even features a female member of Ratchet's species, which is sure to satisfy a particular type of fan.
Other games mentioned in the report that are coming to Sony's next-gen console include: Square Enix and Luminous Productions' Project Athia, Annapurna's Stray, Housemarque and PlayStation Studios' Returnal, LittleBigPlanet's A Big Adventure, Destruction Allstars, Ember Lab's Kena: Bridge of Spirits, Goodbye Volcano High, Soulstorm, Ghostwire Tokyo, Superbrothers' The Far Shore, Gearbox and Counterplay Games' Godfall, Solar Ash, Hitman 3, Astro's Playroom, and Little Devil Inside.

Spider-Man, Ratchet and Clank, Gran Turismo and More Are Coming To PS5

  • I really love Ratchet and Clank, and I like the look of the new one - also the new Spiderman as the previous game from the same developer was really good.

But I'm not sure if it's quite enough... if the new Horizon Zero Dawn is out opening day, that would be enough. For me it all depends on the timing of all these games releasing...

it is nice the console supports UltraHD Blu-ray Discs though, when the PS4 did not (not even the Pro).

    • Yeah, for me the backwards compatibility with PS4 got me in the door, but announcements of these three have me pretty well sold:
      - Spider-Man: Miles Morales
      - Horizon: Forbidden West
      - Demons Souls remake by BluePoint (the team that did the Shadow of the Colossus remake)

With the only Xbox games I care about being supported on PC as well, I never had a reason to pick one up, so the only question was if I'd bother picking a PS5 up now or later. I'm still not convinced I need one on day one, but that I'll be buyi

      • Oops thanks for correcting the Horizon name, Zero Dawn is just the first one...

I was wondering about Demons Souls... so that's a remake? Although I played through Dark Souls and some followups I never did play Demons Souls.

        • Yup, it’s a remake. Updated models and visuals and it sounds like some updated mechanics. I played Demon’s Souls back when it was newish and fell in love with it. I liked Dark Souls, but never quite fell in love with it the same way. I blame it on “you can’t recapture the magic of the original”, which for me was Demon’s Souls, but for most people was Dark Souls.

I also wonder how well Demon’s Souls would hold up, since it had some rough edges that I must admit were r

The screenshots in TFA are not great quality but they don't look any better than the PS4 to me. I guess they will get pushed to 60 fps and maybe some better textures for 4k, but it's not a massive leap forward, at least not yet.

Gran Turismo is usually a graphical tour de force so it will be interesting to see some proper footage of that.

I wonder what backwards compatibility will be like. For some games like Gran Turismo Sport they actually look worse on the PS4 Pro in some ways, something makes the trees look like cardboard cut-outs. The frame rate in exterior replay shots went from 30 fps to 60 fps on the Pro, which ironically makes them look fake because we are so used to seeing 30 fps on TV.

I have no interest in the Sony CensoredStation 5.
Look, even Japanese games have the more authentic version on the Xbox: "Devil May Cry 5 Slightly Censored, But Only On PS4" (Kotaku).

Hell Sony is censoring harder than Nintendo! "Brave Neptunia On PS4 Gets Censored, Nintendo Switch Version Remains Uncensored For Now" (OAG).

If you want to buy games why would you buy them on the CensoredStation 5 instead of the XBSX or just on PC?

Because I'm more interested in great first/third party games than a tiny bit of censorship in a game I'll not play??

And if anything is censored I am free to own more than one console or gaming platform?

The cuts they made seem silly to me, but equally silly to claim it's the end of the world.

You posted this in multiple threads... but most us just don’t care about your "censorship." I got my share of booty in real life, i don’t need cartoon animation to get me off.

And if I did, I’m sure there’s a website for that.

    • As someone who doesn't use consoles to play (sorry, until they invent a controller that can sensibly play FPS and RTS, I ain't interested), what kind of censorship is going on there?

Since PC games are fortunately spared, since, well, if you censor your games, someone else won't and I'll buy those instead, it's not like anyone could dictate who can or cannot make games for my platform...

Are you sure that was Sony? It was probably Capcom, the developer and publisher. And they probably did it to make localization cheaper, i.e. they can slap on a bunch of different languages and target the lowest common denominator among all those countries.

That's what happened with the Playstation Mini. The reason it had PAL versions of games was because they supported the most languages and the developer was being cheap.

  • Obviously, there will be another dozen or so versions of Skyrim on the PS5 too!

  • So happy to hear they are making a new Ratchet and Clank game. The previous games in the series have been very entertaining.
